The Jim Baldwin Memorial Award:

The Prize will be awarded on Thursday, July 17 at the Howe Sound Brew Pub.

Jim Baldwin:

Jim was one of the pioneers of Squamish climbing. He established many of the original routes in the area including the first ascent of the Grand Wall with Ed Cooper. Jim Baldwin authored the original Squamish Climber's guidebook, it listed all 21 routes. Jim was killed in a rappelling accident on Washington Column in Yosemite Valley in 1965.

Concept:

The prize is awarded to the climber or team of climbers who display boldness, innovation or significance in the climbing of a new route in the Squamish area.

The motivation is to pay tribute to the pioneers of Squamish climbing and to draw attention to the continuing breakthroughs in climbing taking place in the region.

Categories:

Celebrating the Present era

Awarded for a climb that has taken place within the past 2 calendar years (this year, summer 2006 is allowed) in the Squamish area.

Celebrating the Past  era    

Awarded for a climb or contribution to climbing completed prior to the past 2 calendar years that significantly contributed to the history or development of Squamish climbing.

Nomination:

Anyone can nominate a climber or team of climbers by emailing or writing to the Squamish Mountain Festival. 

The climb or contribution to climbing must be of significance to and in the region of Squamish.

Nominations can be from any area or country.

Climb must be verifiable.

Voting:

A designated board will vote from the list of nominations and choose the winners.

The winners will be announced annually at the Squamish Mountain Festival.

Winners will be notified prior to the festival and every effort will be made to have them at the event.

Award:

The Past and Present Award winners will receive a commemorative plaque and his/her/their name/names engraved on the Jim Baldwin Memorial Award.

Following the festival the Jim Baldwin Memorial Award will be on permanent display at the Squamish Adventure Centre.
