steep shot
- a climbing photography comp:

Thursday, July 17 - Howe Soud Brew Pub (Doors 7pm, Show 9pm)

WHAT IT IS...

Five chosen photographers have been asked to produce a slideshow of their best climbing or climbing related photography. The slide shows will be 3-5 minute digital slide show set to music. $3000.00 in cash as well as prizes are up for grabs for the top photography and slide shows. The slide shows will be judged, and the top 3 will be awarded.

THEMES

The theme of the contest is Climbing and images should revolve around this. Of course, this theme is pretty open ended, but ideas for subjects might include…bouldering, sport, trad, ice, alpine, porcupines, mountains, snow, people (with or without facial hair, doing crazy things or simply having fun), dogs, air, dreamy climbingscapes, oatmeal, clouds…really the sky is the limit, so the shooters will let their creative prowess flow, as long as it has something to do with climbing.

THE JUDGING

The work will be judged on style, composition, originality and "how did he get that shot?" There are two categories; the work and the presentation. The work will judged by looking at the various images and judging acording to the criteria above. The presentation will be judged on audiance appeal, so let your voice be heard!

ANDREW QUERNER

A climber for over a decade, Andrew Querner is also a photographer residing in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.  At the relatively late age of 26 he began photographing the climbing life, a subject that would eventually offer him a chance to make his first meaningful pictures, not to mention propel him towards a career in photography.  Working within the documentary tradition, Andrew continues to expand his climbing 'story' slowly and steadily over time. Outside of his climbing work he is pursuing a number of personal projects, most notably an expansive photographic document exploring the social consequences of the Athabasca Oil Sands.  His work has been recognized by the Banff Mountain Photography Competition, Photo District News and in 2007, based on the merit of his climbing portfolio he was invited  to New York to participate in the Eddie Adams Workshop. His pictures have appeared in TIME, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Alpinist, Climbing, and Rock and Ice.  Outside of climbing and photography Andrew takes time to discover new music and film, and has recently discovered the addictive qualities of surfing. His blog www.restlessplanet.wordpress.com , offers casual observations of his photography experiences.

JIA CONDON

Jia has traveled the world in search of adventure. A well-rounded climber and a UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide, has been to China, Antarctica, Greenland, and Baffin Island. His first sailing trip took him across the fearsome Drake Passage aboard a 54-foot ketch named Northanger. After reaching the Antarctic Peninsula Jia and Rich Prohaska made the first ascent of Cape Renard Tower (aka Una's Tits). He crewed on the same boat from St. John's (NF) to West Greenland -- a 3-month journey -- in order to climb there.

My name is " J I A" not " J A I", which is likely how it should have been spelled, and would make it easier to pronounce correctly. Phonetically sounds like 'Hi" with a J. Some people think of me as a 'Professional Recreationalist' (such as my wife), as I have created a life for myself where I can pursue my passion as an alpinist. I am a mountain adventurer skilled in mountain safety for skiing, climbing, mountaineering, and search and rescue. I specialize in photography that is centered on my pursuits in the mountains and travel and adventure. I am available to hire for guiding, teaching mountain skills, and/or photographing your dream adventure.

JORDAN WRIGHT

For the past 12 years climbing has taken me to some amazing places.  Boulders, sport or cracks, climbing has brought me my greatest moments and my best friends.  With my camera I strive to capture the moments we all live for. Whether its finally sticking that heinous sloper, pulling the crux of a new project or climbing an endless crack, I hope my images inspire people to get out and climb!
